If you come to live\/study in Maastricht or the surrounding area, register with a GP in your area. The GP has all your medical data. This is very important when assessing your request for help when you contact our emergency medical service. The General Practitioner Maastricht and Heuvelland is only available for emergencies outside opening hours of the general practitioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does healthcare work in the Netherlands?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The GP is part of primary health care, which is why you have to register with a GP in your area. For all your health problems, both physical and psychological, you first go to the doctor. He\/she can treat most health problems. If necessary, the GP will refer you to a specialist in the hospital. In the Netherlands, it is not allowed to go directly to the hospital (unless it is an emergency). If treatment by a specialist is needed, you should first consult a general practitioner, who will give you a referral letter. Don’t forget to make a photocopy of the referral letter for your health insurance company. The GP will not always automatically prescribe medication. In some cases, the GP makes a home visit, but these consultations are more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
