How does healthcare work in the Netherlands?
The GP is part of primary health care, which is why you have to register with a GP in your area. For all your health problems, both physical and psychological, you first go to the doctor. He/she can treat most health problems. If necessary, the GP will refer you to a specialist in the hospital. In the Netherlands, it is not allowed to go directly to the hospital (unless it is an emergency). If treatment by a specialist is needed, you should first consult a general practitioner, who will give you a referral letter. Don’t forget to make a photocopy of the referral letter for your health insurance company. The GP will not always automatically prescribe medication. In some cases, the GP makes a home visit, but these consultations are more expensive.
